If there's a franchise in dire need of a redemption arc, it's Spy Kids. While the first movie has been a success and holds a dear place in many people's hearts, the following sequels didn't do much to keep Spy Kids in good graces. Instead, they got worse and worse.

The plot of Spy Kids is easily explained: there are spies, and they're kids. Their parents are spies as well. They have to do spy stuff as a family. And that formula actually worked pretty well as the first Spy Kids was one of those family movies that were not only fun for kids, but also for their parents.

And then the franchise went to hell with three more installments that got progressively more unbearable.

But fifth time's a charm, maybe? The fifth movie in the franchise, Spy Kids: Armageddon, may be the last hope to resurrect a cute little family movie. Or it's going to be a cringefest that will, at best, serve as a drinking game: take a shot every time you'd rather have a tooth pulled out than continue watching!

But hey – there's still a chance that they'll find their groove again, making the movie worthwhile!

Spy Kids: Armageddon Release Date & Trailer

Whatever the case may be, we'll know soon. Spy Kids: Armageddon releases on September 22, 2023 on Netflix.

Audiences get a whole new family of spies and director Robert Rodriguez made one thing clear: "this movie really wants to stand on its own, kind of establish the family". Is that a threat or a promise, establishing the family? Even more movies? As long as he gets the first movie's vibe going again, I'm all in, but I'm kind of concerned about how low movie ratings can go if the trend of the franchise becoming worse and worse continues.

But let's have a look at the teaser trailer we got before putting our heads in the sand:

Spy Kids: Armageddon Cast

Robert Rodriguez has yet again written the script, this time with the help of his sons Rebel and Racer. It seems at least they had a good family time writing, so that's nice!

The cast features a whole new family of spies and some newcomers. Here's the list:

  • Connor Esterson as Tony, the Spy Boy
  • Everly Carganilla as Patty, the Spy Girl
  • Zachary Levi as Terrence, their father
  • Gina Rodriguez as Nora, their mother
  • Billy Magnussen as Rey "The King" Kingston

It's a surefire way to get the evilness of a villain across by having him named "King" three times in different languages and variants – narcissistic, maybe? Let's find out in September!

Spy Kids: Armageddon Plot

The official plot synopsis sounds like the old vibe could come back to our screens.

When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.

Until September, there's not much left to do than pray that Spy Kids as a franchise will find its footing again. I desperately need a kid's movie that's bearable for adults again to hold onto my title as the "cool aunt", so please, help me out here, Netflix!
