On January 31, 2023, EA announced that both Apex Legends Mobile and Battlefield Mobile were being cancelled. At first, it looked like the publishers were merely pivoting away from mobile, but after this news we're becoming concerned. What's happening behind closed doors at EA, and why are so many seemingly-good ideas being canned?

Respawn's Single-Player Game Set In The Titanfall / Apex Universe Has Been Cancelled

As reported by Bloomberg, EA are facing very poor revenue projections for the current quarter, and will consequently be shutting down a number of projects. Besides the aforementioned mobile games, they've also cancelled an unannounced single-player Apex game.

Per Bloomberg:

The canceled project, code-named TFL or Titanfall Legends, was a single-player game set in the universe shared by the Apex Legends and Titanfall games.

Management informed the unnamed game’s team of about 50 people that EA will try to find positions for them within the company. Anyone who can’t be placed will be given severance packages and laid off, according to the people familiar with the matter, who asked to speak anonymously because they were not authorized to speak to the press. An EA spokesperson declined to comment.

Obviously, when huge companies fall on hard times, the "fat will be trimmed". But as graphic as that phrase may be, it feels appropriate. This is butchery for Respawn, whose total workforce has been significantly reduced this past week.

We wish the very best to all of those devs, and we hope that Respawn's great reputation will help them secure further opportunities (rather than their association with EA).

Are you disappointed by the cancellation? Or are you too pre-occupied on next week's highly-anticipated release to care?
