LEC Season Finals: Teams, Dates& Format

The LEC Season Finals are just a few days away, so let's take a look at the participating teams, the schedule and the format of the tournament.

The LEC Season Finals are about to start in roughly two weeks from now and many fans are eagerly waiting to know, which team is going to win and which orgs might go to Worlds in Korea. So let's take a look at the rosters that will fight for Europe's crown, the schedule and all the important dates of the Finals.

LEC Season Finals: The Participating Teams

Six LEC teams are about to go head-to-head for the crown and for the four Worlds spot. These teams were the top six teams across the three LEC splits, Winter, Spring and Summer. The Split winners qualified automatically and are now joined by the three teams, that gathered enough Champion Points across the split.

And these are the six Teams:

It's safe to say, that G2 Esports might be the biggest favorite to claim the Season Finals title. The roster around star mid laner Rasmus "Caps" Winther, were already qualified due to their Winter and Summer Split victories. Also, they gathered the most champion points. Winning two out of the three splits is an impressive performance.

G2 will face Team BDS in the first round of the Season Finals.

MAD Lions

MAD Lions have to be the other favorite to win the LEC Season Finals. The team had a very underwhelming Summer Split and not even qualified for the playoffs, losing against Excel and Fnatic in the group stage. But they won the LEC Spring Split and have a talented roster. They will have to face Excel in the second first round match.

Team BDS

Team BDS had an impressive Summer Split, only failing to qualify for the Playoffs due to a Lower Bracket Round 2 loss against Team Heretics. The roster finished within the top 5 in every split and even managed to win the Spring Split regular season with seven wins to two losses.

Excel

That Excel even qualified for the LEC Season Finals can be seen as a little wonder, since the team finished dead last in the Winter and Spring Split. But they managed to reach the second place in the Summer Split, when they got stomped by G2 Esports in the Finals. So it will be interesting to see how this team is going to perform.

Excel will have to compete against MAD Lions in the first round.

Fnatic

Fnatic is one of the most popular and oldest organization in the European League of Legends landscape. But since the EU LCS rebranded in to the LEC, the former multi-times champions weren't able to claim another title. Now, Fnatic has played a rather underwhelming summer split, losing the Lower Bracket Round 2 against Excel.

The team will face loser of the match between G2 and Team BDS in the Lower Bracket of the LEC Season Finals.

SK Gaming hadn't had the best split in Summer and the org failed to qualify for the playoffs. But they managed to qualify due to their gathered Champion Points from a third place in the Winter Split, a fifth place in the Spring Split and a mediocre sixth place in the Summer Split.

LEC Season Finals Format Explained

The format of the LEC Season Finals is relatively easy, and all games will be Best of 5.

Six teams are participating in a Double Elimination Bracket, the seedings are determined by the gathered Champion Points. The 1st seed team is allowed to choose between the 3rd and the 4th seed teams as their Round 1 opponent. Meanwhile, the 5th seed team will play against the lower seed from the upper bracket Round 1 losers and the 6th seed teams has to play against the higher seed team.

The teams are aiming for a qualification for the Worlds 2023 in Korea as well. The top three will gain a direct qualification, while the fourth placed one has to play in the Worlds Qualifying Series.

Location & First Matches

The Round 1&2 matches as well as the Winner's Bracket Semifinal will take place in the LEC Studios in Berlin, Germany. While the Loser's Bracket Semifinal and the Final itself will take place in the Sud de France Arena, Montpellier, France. The Arena has the capacity for up to 14,000 fans.

The first schedules matches are :

  • MAD Lions vs Excel, set for Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 4pm. CEST
  • G2 Esports vs Team BDS, set for Sunday, August 20, at 4pm CEST

The other Round 1 matches are schedules for Saturday, August 26, at 6 pm CEST and for Sunday, August 27, at 6 pm CEST.

  • Round 2 is set for Saturday, September 2, at 6pm
  • Round 3 is set for Sunday, September 3, at 6pm CEST and Saturday, September 9, at 6pm CEST

The Finals are scheduled for Sunday, September 10, at 6pm CEST
