The Call of Duty League is your chance to watch the game played at the absolute highest level. In this article you can find everything you need to know about when to watch, what the current team standings are, and what the current rule set is for competitive play. You can expect matches almost every weekend between early-December and July, so check back in to stay up to date through the highs and lows of the 2023 season.

How Does The Call of Duty League Work In 2023?

The best 48 players in the world, across twelve teams, will battle it out across five Majors and one Championship final to be named the CDL Champions of the 2023 Season. Teams play each other across three weekends prior to each Major to qualify for these LAN events. And over the year, the teams gain points in the overall standings, with the top eight qualifying for the Championship LAN event at the end of the year. If they win that, then they're crowned the Champions, and we move on to the next Season and the next title.

If this is your first year getting into Call of Duty esports, then you might be surprised at how differently the game is played when compared to normal public matches. In short, you'll be watching teams of 4 play Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and a third mode (usually it's Control), across a select few MW2 maps and with a heavily reduced arsenal of weapons and equipment. But we go into the detail on the full competitive settings further down in the article.

Where Can You Watch CDL Matches In 2023?

Every single game is streamed directly to their YouTube channel live. It's that simple, thankfully. But, if you prefer more of a streaming vibe, then a lot of ex-pros and content creators hold watch parties during LAN events. Personally, we would advise Zoomaa, host of the Flank podcast, as one of the best ex-pros who watches and analyses current competitive CoD.

What's The Current Map Pool?

The current map pool is looking solid, at least by comparison to Vanguard:

  • Hardpoint: Embassy, Fortress, Hotel, Hydro, Mercado
  • Search and Destroy: El Asilo, Embassy, Fortress, Hotel, Mercado
  • Control: El Asilo, Expo, Hotel

Yes, yes we get it, most comp fans would rather watch Raid ever series than Hotel, but at least we have a 5/5/3 map pool and not a 4/4/2.

What Are The Current Competitive Rules?

We now have the competitive settings for 2023, and so we can confirm that this much has been banned:

  • LMGs, Battle Rifles, Marksman Rifles, Shotguns and Riot Shields are banned.
  • All launchers are banned.
  • All silencers, lasers and armor piercing attachments are banned.
  • The only killstreaks allowed to are the Cruise Missile, Precision Airstrike and S.A.E.
  • Almost all Lethals, Tacticals and Field Upgrades are banned except for Stuns, Smokes, Frag Grenades, Semtex, Dead Silence and Trophy Systems.
  • All Base perks except for Battle Hardened, Double Time, and Bomb Squad are banned.
  • All Ultimate perks are banned.

It might sound awfully restrictive, but it makes Call of Duty a fundamentally more competitive game to remove the one-shot weapons and anything that can give free info or easy kills. There are also a few smaller changes to the modes, for instance in SnD the defuse time is 7.5 seconds and not 5, but otherwise the modes are much the same as they are normally.

What Weapons & Equipment Have Been GA'd?

In addition to the officially banned weapons, equipment, perks and Killstreaks, the pros often agree between themselves to ban further items in what's called a GA (gentlemen's agreement).

These are the current items that have been GA'd in addition to what's restricted by the official competitive settings:

  • AK-74u
  • STB-556
  • Fennec 45
  • M4
  • Smoke Grenades

The SCAR will be next on the chopping block.

What Viewer Rewards Do You Get For Tuning In?

To promote viewership of the CDL, you actually get rewards in-game for tuning into the different events. We don't know what these will be yet for the 2023 Season.

How To Get Viewership Rewards

  1. Link your YouTube and Activision accounts via this link.
  2. Watch the CDL on your YouTube account and the rewards will be automatically redeemed to your account.

It's really that simple, so tune in and enjoy.

And that, finally, is it. Absolutely everything you need to know about the CDL.
