Genshin Impact Ultimate Artifact Guide: Stats Explained

Genshin Impact is a very fun adventure game, but the artifact system can be quite complicated for beginners. I will explain all the most important things you should know to get a better understanding of the topic.

Genshin Impact is a great adventure game with very intricate lore, but to progress your journey to Teyvat, you need to beat many bosses' asses. While you can ascend in your Adventure Rank to unlock more and more story quests, you also need to continuously level up and strengthen your characters.

It turns out that it's very annoying to play the game if your damage output isn't even enough to deal with your daily enemies. That's why you need to learn about artifacts at one point or another. They simply are one of the strongest ways to increase your damage in the game.

It does become a real necessity as soon as you reach Adventure Rank 30, just because you unlock 5-star Artifacts then, but before that using good 4-star artifacts can help as well. Just be aware that you will probably not be getting many 5-star artifacts before AR 40, but there still will be a possibility. When reaching AR 45 you unlock the Level 90 Domains and will be able to get at least one 5-star artifact guaranteed.

Genshin Impact – What Are Stats?

Have you ever been scrolling on the internet to look for Genshin memes just to then find something like this:

Reading through the replies of this tweet feels like you need to be a genius to translate what's going on. If you relate to this, just know that you aren't alone and there is no shame in being confused, especially if this type of game is your first.

Artifacts all have their own unique characteristics and quirks that fit different characters, there are e.g. artifacts for each element, which work as safe bets you can use on your character if you aren't sure what your character "scales" on (on which stat they base their damage on). You can out what your

There are 9 stats currently in the game that you will come across in your artifacts:

Name

Meaning

Crit Rate

How likely is it to deal a critical hit

Crit Damage

How much dmg gets dealt extra with a critical hit in percentage of the attack

AttackHow much physical dmg can be dealt
HPHow big the life bar will be
DdefenseHow hard it is for enemies to harm you

Elemental Mastery

How much dmg gets dealt extra for elemental reactions
Energy RechargeHow long your elemental burst needs to load

Elemental DMG Bonus

How much dmg gets dealt by the specific element
Healing BonusHow much of hp can be recovered

While rolling, you may notice that some of these stats come in percentages, some in a fixed added number and some can come in both (e.g. Defense, thank you so much Hoyo). This is because your characters have some fixed characteristics that always stay the same, but you can always amplify those numbers with percentages that scale off of different attributes, which you will have to research depending on your character.

You know what you never knew you needed? That's right, Scara plushy is real baby, and it's here. Its really fluffy.

To find the general statistics of your characters, you need to go to your menu, click on "character" and then at "attributes" on "details". The window that opens up is very important because it shows you on what scale your critical rate and critical damage (cr/cd) are at this moment. There is a golden rule that cr:cd should be in a ratio of 1:2. That could be, e.g. 50:100, which means that the character has a 50% chance to deal a critical hit, and if they do, they will have 100% of the attack stat. Depending on your character, this can change, but crit rate should always be smaller than crit damage. You need to balance this out to have both a realistic chance of dealing a critical hit and then actually making a difference in damage with it.

Now, there are some stats everyone agrees on being bad: mostly these are def and hp, because a very little percentage of players actually gains an advantage from those drops, but they still seem to come up much more than other stats. Fun fact: If you get any Geo character, you can use the def artifacts and deal really neat damage (Itto mains unite).

I have gathered two examples of a good and a bad artifact from my own game, bear in mind that 1. I haven't found my one dream artifact yet, I have severely angered the def gods and 2. the good artifact is for Ayato, who scales on atk and hp!

Some stats that are wonderful regardless for who you roll for are definitely cr/cd. They just help any character period. The elemental bonuses are quite nice as well, especially for more elemental focused characters like all the catalysts, but can be a factory for many almost perfect artifacts when they roll on artifacts that are meant for another element, like from this poor fella here.

Some sets give you additional stats when you give one character more than one piece of it. You should always look into what works the best for your specific character, especially since Hoyo tends to create more character focused artifacts now, as most of the general stuff has been covered. The Echoes of an Offering set, for example, is almost tailor-made for Ayato.

Main Stats And Sub Stats

Main stats and sub stats are exactly what they sound like, they are the biggest additions you can get from an artifact, and the sub stats are a nice bonus. Depending on how seriously you take your damage, you have to look more into the sub stats as well, but for the beginning it's great to focus on the main stats mainly, especially because rolling the perfect sub stats makes everyone's blood boil.

That's it for now, folks. I hope that after this article, you will find a smoother introduction into the vast and confusing world of artifacts in Genshin Impact. I am sure that after that, it becomes a lot easier to find your own way around the game and your damage numbers will skyrocket. Just don't forget to always level up and also apply the stats rules on weapons, and you'll be all good to go!
