F1 23 is the latest racing simulation from Codemasters and EA Sports. The official game of Formula 1 has positively surprised the community with its release, because the gameplay is quite good. Admittedly: It couldn't have been much worse than F1 22.

Many beginners will certainly buy F1 23 and ask themselves: How do I get as fast as the best drivers in time trials? When can I finally beat the AI in the career? With our tips and tricks for F1 23 you will definitely get faster! However, the precondition for this is that you also invest some time in your training, because nothing comes from nothing.

F1 23: How To Get Faster

The career mode or simple Grand Prix races are a good start for beginners, but they get boring in the long run. The most fun lies in online leagues, which you can find on various social media platforms or on the internet. But before you can participate in online leagues, you should have a certain speed and, above all, drive fairly and respectfully. To help you improve your race pace, we will give you the following tips:

  • Time Trail
  • Offline Modes
  • Best Setups
  • Forget About Assists
  • League Racing
  • eSports

The F1 23 gameplay has become much better, especially for controller players. With the new "Precision Drive" feature, you can steer much more directly and precisely with the controller. The reaction time has been significantly reduced, so driving is much more fun straight away. The time lost compared to the wheel has been reduced and is no longer as demotivating. In general, playing is simply more fun than last year, because Codemasters and EA also let simple changes to the setup of the car affect the speed and thus come much closer to reality.

Time Trail

In time trial, you can do your laps by yourself and get to know the new tracks in Las Vegas and Lusail. Here, your car cannot be damaged, and the tyres do not wear out. It is also the optimal mode to learn driving without assists.

Copy the setup of the best drivers in the rankings to improve your lap time. But beware: these setups are often only good for one lap and can lead to overheating tyres or an unstable car in the race!

Setups

Good setups regularly make the difference in motorsport. In Formula 1, it's a matter of tenths of a second that can make the difference between winning and losing. As soon as you race against a good AI or take part in a league race, you MUST drive with a good setup, otherwise you have no chance.

Setups have always been a scientific exercise in F1, because you have to set up your car differently for each track and, most importantly, adapt it to your driving style. If a set-up works well for driver A on track X, that doesn't mean it will work just as well for driver B. You really have to find out for yourself which set-up works best for you. You really have to find out for yourself which settings suit you and your driving style.

A simple solution is often to use the setups of the eSport drivers from the time trials and change some small things so that the setups also work in the race. Lower the tyre pressure a little and choose a less aggressive suspension to protect your tyres and avoid oversteering.

Turn Off Assists

This tip may sound absurd to beginners, but read it first and then evaluate it. If you've never played F1 or a motorsport game before, you'll have a hard time with the fastest cars in the world. The assists help you to keep the car on the track. But it's a fact: if you drive completely without assists, you'll be faster.

Of course, you shouldn't overdo it and turn off all the assists at once. But what you can also do without at the beginning is the steering and brake assistant. Just leave that nonsense off. It's no problem if you still have all the other assists active in the first few laps, because you're supposed to be familiarising yourself with the game.

But generally speaking, the sooner you turn off assists from the beginning, the sooner you will get used to driving without assists, because you don't get used to driving with assists.

So when you are ready to go out on the track without assists, you should first deactivate the automatic gear shifting and learn to shift by yourself. Manual shifting will gain you 0.1 to 0.3 seconds per lap, depending on the track.

Next, you should disable the traction control. Here, you can switch from full traction control to medium traction control. As soon as you are comfortable with this, the traction control is directly deactivated.

Your rear tyres will now spin if you go straight to full throttle in first, second, or third gear on corner exit. You have to play with the throttle and accelerate slowly so that the tyres don't spin, and you don't get overtaken by your own rear.

The familiarisation phase here will take a little longer than with manual gear shifting, but the effort is worth it: without traction control, you are more than one second faster per lap!

Now we have done something for the acceleration of the car, the next step is to do something for the braking. The assist "ABS" (anti-lock braking system) prevents – as the name suggests – the tyres from locking under full braking power. This limits you especially in big braking zones like in Monza before turn 1, because the braking distance obviously increases.

Without ABS, you can sometimes hit the brakes ten metres later and throw the car into the corner with trailbraking. Of course, you have to be careful that your tyres don't lock. So you have to release the brake gradually, otherwise you will get the well-known lock-up and ruin your tyres. As soon as you have perfected your driving without ABS (which can take some time), you will gain 0.2 to 0.3 seconds per lap.

Last but not least, there is the racing line, which shows you when to brake and when to turn. But this line also restricts your driving! Without a line, you can find your own limit and definitely find some tenths on the track. The disadvantage here is that it takes many laps on each track until you have perfected this and find every braking point. But without the line and all the other assists, playing F1 23 is much more fun!
