Baldur’s Gate 3 is a huge RPG, with tons of systems, features and items. Among these are the so-called Soul Coins, a mysterious item type which players can find pretty early on. But what do they do? It’s not quite clear.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Soul Coins Explained

The item description for Soul Coins gives you some hints on what they do, but doesn’t give you a straight-up explanation:

Strange, incomprehensible whispers emanate from this coin, pervading your mind with rage and despair.

These coins can power Infernal Engines.

What the heck are Infernal Engines? Well, they can be found in Avernus, the game’s equivalent of Hell. And you can use them with one of Avernus’ inhabitants, Karlach. She can be found pretty early on in Act 1 and can join your party.

After you recruit her, Karlach can consume a Soul Coin to feed the her internal infernal machine, which activates the condition “Infernal Fury”. This grants her 1-4 fire damage to melee attacks while in Rage or when HP is below 25%. So pretty useful!

However, Soul Coins are fairly rare. Also, we don’t know yet if Soul Coins have any other use, so it might be worth saving up!

Soul Coins Locations

We’re still making our way through BG3, which is a huge game. So this is not a comprehensive list of all Soul Coins yet. As soon as we find more coins, we will update the article.

  • Dank Crypt #1: In the room with the big sarcophagus and traps, can be found in one of the small sarcophagi
  • Dank Crypt #2: In the opposite room, found in a sarcophagus inside a sarcophagus.
  • Dank Crypt #3: Same room, located in the small nook where you can find Withers. The Soul Coin can be found in his sarcophagus
  • Emerald Grove: Head east up to the top of the little hill, where you can find Nadira. Either safe Nadira to get the Soul Coin, or loot it from her body if she dies.
  • Risen Road: After you recruit Karlach, head to the building close by where you can find Anders. Kill him and his friends and you can loot a Soul Coin from one of the boxes in the building
  • Moonrise Tower: Three Soul Coins can be looted from Lann, Armorer to the Absolute

That’s all the Soul Coins we found so far, but we’re sure there are more. Good luck finding these valuable items!
