Baldur's Gate 3 is full of different quest lines. Everything feels like being mandatory on its own, either to progress the story further, learn more about the companions or just for the world building.

With "Find the Nightsong" we have a quest line on our hand, which is mandatory to solve to progress further within the story line in the first Act.

Let's take a look at what need to be done in order to get this quest in the first place and to solve it.

Minor spoilers ahead!

Baldur's Gate 3: Starting "Find the Nightsong"

Before you even get to start the quest line, you need to find the Druid Liam who provides you with the task. He can be found in the Druid Grove. But keep one thing in mind: It's one of the quests where your choice matters and your consequences can lead to a different outcome.

For this quest, it's vital to have Shadowheart in your party, as this is a part of her personal quest line.

In order to find the Nightsong you need to go to the Gauntlet of Shar. You reach this place through the Grand Mausoleum by pressing the buttons under the three paintings in the following order:

  1. Moonrise Towers
  2. Grief
  3. General

There are different clues lying around that place. But this is just the beginning, so we move on.

How to touch the Orb

After you reach the chamber in Gauntlet of Shar you will be presented yet another puzzle that need to be solved before pressing on. The small statue pushes you back, as you attempt to approach it. This is how you solve the problem:

  • Explore the side rooms and pull the lever to lower all lanterns
  • Interact with those to extinguish the light
  • Only when the room is shrouded in darkness, you see a glowing pattern on the ground
  • Use one character and avoid the glowing lines to touch the orb

Collect all the Umbral Gems

You need four Umbral Gems in order to reach the inner Sanctum. One of the four Gems can be acquired by defeating Yurgir at the east part of the temple. You can even cheese your way through this fight, by asking him to recite his contract and deceive him. This leads him to kill his own minions and himself as well, easy!

The other three can be acquired by completing Sharran trials. Here are our suggestions how to tackle those trials:

  • Faith-Step Trial – After you offered the blood, the room will be plunged into darkness, and you need to remember the order of the platforms. You can either use the Daylight spell, to lighten up the room again or just use the Fly or Dimension Door spell to reach the last platform
  • Self-Same Trial – Here you need to fight clones from your parties in order to get the Umbral Gem. To make the battle a little bit easier, get naked before you offer your blood and reequip your equipment before the battle starts.
  • Soft-step Trial – You need to bypass the maze without being spotted by the shadows. Using an invisibility spell will help you greatly. But the best and quickest way to reach your destination and pick up the Soft-Step Key on the table in a hidden room, just use the Dimensions Door spell.

After completing all three trials, you can move forward and reach eventually the Silent Library. Fend off the enemies who are waiting for you and unlock the Treasure Room. There you'll find the book "Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger" that need to get back to the rows of books, and the door to the weapon to kill the Nightsong will open.

Now we have the weapon to kill the Nightsong and as we venture deeper into the Gauntlet of Shar, the boss fight is the point of no return for the first Act. All fast travel points and some objectives won't be available anymore.

What needs to be done in order to see this through to the end?

  • Beat the boss Balthazar
  • An important decision will show up, choose wisley
    • We suggest you pick "Trust Shadowheart – Do not interfere".
    • Letting Shadowheart kill the Nightsong she will be consumed by Shar's evilness, and she has proven worth to her deity. She will get a strong armor and weapon, but also has no room for love anymore – if you have already dated her you get another dialogue option
    • If you choose the persuasion dialogue, Shadowheart will spare Nightsong, and she will reveal herself as a deva on of Selune's daughters. The storyline will evolve further around Nightsong and the dialgoe options and romance options could also change
  • If you interfere and kill Nightsong yourself, Shadowheart will leave the party permanently and you won't get her back

Prepare a backup save file, in order to try other dialogue options, without starting the game anew.
