Baldur's Gate 3 is usually played in a party of four characters. And when you play in that way you can afford for each character to have their own specialization (we have a separate tier-list for group play here: Baldur's Gate 3: Best classes). But for solo play it's much better to have a character that can do a little bit of everything.

Below, you can find the best Baldur's Gate 3 solo build. We've included the race, class and background, as well as our suggestion for ability scores and Cantrips. We hope it's helpful, enjoy!

Baldur's Gate 3: Best Solo Build

Here is the best solo build for Baldur's Gate 3:

  • Race: Dwarf
    • Sub-Race: Gold Dwarf
  • Class: Cleric
    • Sub-Class: Light Domain
      • Cantrips:
        • Sacred Flame: This is our bread and butter damage Cantrip.
        • Guidance: Basically a flat d4 buff to every skill check, which is massive for a solo play.
        • Resistance: We honestly won't use this Cantrip much, but it's at least less situational than Thaumaturgy.
      • Prepared Spells:
        • Healing Word: Why healing for solo? Because we need to be able to keep NPCs alive for a number of quests. And Healing Word is the go-to spell because you can cast it with a Bonus Action.
        • Inflict Wounds: This is the highest damage Level 1 spell in the game, but we can only use it within melee range.
        • Guiding Bolt: This is our best option for doing damage at range.
  • Background: Guild Artisan
  • Ability Scores:

Strength10+0
Dexterity14+2
Constitution16+3
Intelligence8-1
Wisdom16+3

Baldur’s Gate 3 Level Cap Explained

Cleric is the very obvious choice for a solo playthrough, and we hate to be predictable, but there's no point pretending it's another class. Cleric's have good survivability thanks to their armor proficiencies and healing magic, they can also put out great damage (against both single-target and groups if you pick the Light Domain), and they can bring a solid amount of out-of-combat utility thanks to their Wisdom and knowledge of Guidance. There's really no other choice.

In terms of races, there are actually quite a few options that can work for Clerics. However, with this solo-build we really wanted to focus on survivability, and so the Gold Dwarf was the natural choice. They have a fantastic racial ability that effectively just gives them more health called Dwarven Toughness.

And finally, the Background - why did we pick Guild Artisan? We think that Insight and Perception are important skills (although Perception rolls are definitely less frequent than tabletop), and because both of these are Wisdom-based skills, we can become really effective at them as a Cleric. There's simply no way to cover every skill in a solo playthrough, but with Guild Artisan we at least get to be really great at two of the most important ones.

So, there you have it, our recommendation for a great Baldur's Gate 3 solo build. We hope you found it helpful.
